Marriage Research: Study Shows a 21-Minute Writing Task Can Improve Your Marriage

A study from Northwestern University that is scheduled to be published later this year in “Psychological Science” shows that it may be possible to maintain a healthy marriage with just a pencil, paper, and 21 minutes to spare. Over the course of two years, the study asked 120 married couples about their satisfaction with their relationship and to describe their most recent arguments. During the second year, half of the couples were asked to spend seven minutes every four months in which they would describe their most recent arguments from the hypothetical perspective of a neutral third party who wanted the best for everyone. They found an increase in satisfaction in those couples.
