Adultery is an act that can devastate a marriage. A marriage can survive the blow, however, with dedication and commitment from the erring spouse, as well as the support of the other. It may be much better to avoid adultery all together. Before we go there, it may be good to create a working concept of the idea of adultery. The ancient definition is either a man or woman having sex with another partner outside of their marriage. Both in ancient times and in some modern societies, adultery is a crime with harsh legal and social penalties, including death. This evolved in many societies to grounds for divorce.
